Technical Operator – Job Description
Position Overview
The Technical Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining equipment, systems, and machinery to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality production or technical operations. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to troubleshoot issues in fast-paced environments. The Technical Operator works closely with supervisors, engineers, and maintenance teams to support continuous improvement and operational reliability.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Equipment Management

Operate machinery, technical systems, or production equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Perform equipment start-up, shut-down, and configuration adjustments.

Monitor system performance and report irregularities or equipment faults promptly.
Quality & Safety Assurance

Conduct regular inspections to ensure equipment meets quality and safety standards.

Follow safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and site-specific regulations.

Document and report any hazards or potential risks.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance

Identify and resolve minor mechanical or technical issues to minimize downtime.

Collaborate with maintenance teams for major repairs or scheduled servicing.

Maintain accurate logs of equipment performance, maintenance activities, and production output.
Documentation & Reporting

Complete operational checklists, shift reports, and incident documentation.

Assist in updating SOPs and technical guides as needed.

Track production data and maintain accurate records.
Collaboration & Communication

Work with supervisors, engineers, and quality teams to improve system performance.

Participate in team meetings and provide feedback on operational challenges.

Support cross-training and collaboration across production or operations teams.
Qualifications
Required
-
High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

1–3 years of experience as an operator, technician, or in a similar technical role.

Basic mechanical, electrical, or production-line knowledge.

Ability to read instructions, blueprints, or equipment manuals.

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Preferred

Certifications in manufacturing, equipment operation, or technical trades.

Experience in regulated environments (e.g., FDA, GMP, OSHA compliance).

Familiarity with computer-operated systems, SCADA, or PLC-based equipment.

Forklift or equipment operation certification (depending on industry).

Pay varies by industry and experience

Hourly Rate: $18 – $28 per hour

Experienced/Specialized Technical Operators: $28 – $38+ per hour (advanced machinery, chemical plants, power systems, CNC operations, or broadcast equipment)

Annual Salary Range:

Entry to mid-level: $40,000 – $62,000

Senior or high-skill roles: $65,000 – $85,000+
