As a Motor Vehicle Technician you’ll spend most of your time in our workshop maintaining vehicles to the high standards we set out. The role involves carrying out inspections, repairs and services, warranty work, checking vehicles against VOSA legislation, and handling and storing parts. You’ll also need to make sure all necessary Vehicle Health Checks are completed.
You will be responsible for ensuring all jobs are completed within agreed time-frames and that a high level of productivity is maintained. Analysis, diagnostics and road testing vehicles are also a critical part of this role. You will deliver an outstanding customer experience.

The Vehicle Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of vehicles to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This role requires strong mechanical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work with modern diagnostic equipment. The Vehicle Technician works closely with service advisors, shop supervisors, and other technicians to provide high-quality service and customer satisfaction.
Perform inspections and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues.
Conduct repairs on engines, brakes, transmissions, suspension systems, steering, and HVAC components.
Use diagnostic tools and software to identify faults and verify repair solutions.
Complete routine maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, and filter replacements.
Inspect and maintain vehicle systems according to manufacturer guidelines.
Complete work orders, repair notes, and inspection reports accurately.
Update customers and advisors with repair findings and recommended services.
Follow manufacturer and company documentation standards.
Follow shop safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.
Ensure all repairs meet safety and quality standards.
Test drive vehicles to verify repairs and performance.
Communicate with service advisors, parts departments, and fellow technicians.
Participate in ongoing training and certification programs.
Assist with mentoring junior technicians when needed.
High school diploma or GED.
1–3 years of experience as an automotive or vehicle technician.
Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.
Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
ASE certifications (Automotive Service Excellence).
Experience with hybrid/EV systems.
Dealership or fleet maintenance experience.
Knowledge of OEM diagnostic software (Ford IDS, GM GDS2, Toyota Techstream, etc.).

Compensation varies depending on certifications, shop type, and experience.
Entry-level: $18 – $25 per hour
Mid-level technicians: $25 – $32 per hour
Experienced / ASE-certified: $30 – $40+ per hour
Master or specialty technicians (diesel, EV, performance): $40 – $55+ per hour
General range: $45,000 – $80,000
Highly experienced/Master Tech: $80,000 – $110,000+
Hourly, flat-rate, or hybrid pay plans depending on employer.
